I will make a Will eventually...

  • Have you been meaning to make a Will, but can’t seem to find the time?
  • Think it’ll be too complicated?
  • Worried about the costs involved?
  • Don’t know how to go about it?

Why so many of us have avoided writing a Will

Damian Whitworth, The Times

We all know that dying intestate is something that can be even more painful than it sounds. We are aware of the bureaucratic black hole that will yawn open should a bus mow us down, especially if two parents are taken out and kids are left behind. But I — and, it would seem millions of others — find the whole business strangely paralysing.

Surveys suggest that the most frequent reason for not making a will is that the individual believes they are too young. But research also indicates that of those who haven’t made a will more than a quarter are over 55. Others claim that they do not have anything to leave, they haven’t had time or the procedure is too expensive.

In one survey 12 per cent of respondents said that they hadn’t acted because it made them feel uncomfortable thinking about death. I have a sneaking suspicion that the true figure is much higher. Foolhardy reluctance to confront the reality of our own mortality is storing up problems for those we leave behind.

Without a Will

  • The Government, not you, decides who looks after your children
  • The Government, not you, decides who inherits your home and savings
  • Your spouse or partner may not inherit your estate even if this is your wish

So don’t leave it to chance.
